Privacy Policy

1. Scope and contact

This policy explains how QuizTavern handles personal information when you visit our website, create a host or player account, join a game, use host tools, or contact us. It applies to information QuizTavern controls. A venue or independent host may also handle information under its own privacy practices.

For access requests, corrections, complaints, or other privacy questions, email our privacy contact at support@quiz-tavern.com with “Privacy request” in the subject line.

2. Information we collect

• Accounts and profiles: email address, authentication details, display name, profile photo or avatar, host and venue details, and settings you provide. Google sign-in, if selected, supplies the account details needed to sign you in.
• Games: room code, participant display name, answers or buzzer activity, scores, rankings, event time, and host-created questions or content. A signed-in player’s results can be added to their game history.
• Player preferences: hosts you follow, event alerts, notification email, and email or in-app notification settings.
• Support and technical data: messages you send us, IP address, browser and device information, session information, and logs needed to operate, secure, and troubleshoot the Service.

You can join a supported game as a guest without creating an account, but the host and other people in that room may still see the display name and game activity you choose to use.

3. How we use information

We use information to create and secure accounts; run and display live games; show scores and player history; publish host profiles and event listings where enabled; deliver event alerts you choose to receive; respond to support requests; maintain and improve performance; detect abuse; and meet legal obligations. We limit collection and use to purposes that are reasonable for operating QuizTavern or that we explain when asking for your information.

4. Who can see game information

Hosts can see information needed to run their rooms, including participant names, answers or activity, and scores. Players and viewers in a room may see participant names and rankings on leaderboards or display screens. An event’s public listing and a host’s public profile may show the host name, avatar, venue, and event details. Signed-in player history is intended for that player’s account. Do not choose a display name or upload content you would be uncomfortable sharing with your room.

5. Service providers and other disclosure

We use providers for authentication and data storage, live game infrastructure, website hosting, and email delivery. For example, our current implementation uses Supabase for account and database services, Cloudflare for parts of the realtime experience, and an email delivery provider for notifications. Providers receive only information needed for their work and may process it outside Canada. We remain responsible for information we transfer to service providers under applicable Canadian privacy law.

We may also disclose information when required by law, to protect users or the Service, or as part of a business transfer with appropriate safeguards. Host-controlled events may involve separate venue or host practices; ask the host about information they collect outside QuizTavern.

6. Storage, cookies, and security

We use authentication cookies to keep you signed in. Browser storage may remember theme choices, draft questions, and game or session details so features work as expected. You can clear browser storage in your browser settings, though doing so may sign you out or remove local drafts.

We use technical and organizational safeguards appropriate to the information, including access controls and secure connections. No online service can guarantee absolute security. Information may be stored or processed in Canada or other countries where our providers operate and may be subject to local laws there.

7. Retention

We keep personal information while needed to provide accounts, game features, and support, and for a reasonable period afterward where needed for security, legal obligations, or dispute resolution. Guest game records and backups may persist for operational reasons. When information is no longer needed, we delete or anonymize it in accordance with our retention practices and applicable law. You can request deletion of account information; some records may need to be retained or de-identified.

8. Your choices and rights

You can update available profile and notification settings in your account. You may ask to access or correct personal information we hold, withdraw consent where applicable, or request deletion. We may need to verify your identity and may retain information where law permits or requires it. Withdrawing consent for information essential to a feature may mean we can no longer provide that feature. Send requests or concerns to our privacy contact above. You may also contact the privacy regulator responsible for your jurisdiction if you are unsatisfied with our response.

9. Email and notifications

We send account and service messages needed to operate QuizTavern. If you follow a host and event alerts are enabled, we may send event announcements, reminders, and changes according to your settings. You can turn off optional event email or in-app alerts in your player preferences or follow settings. If we send promotional electronic messages, we will do so with the consent and identification and unsubscribe options required by Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation.

10. Children

QuizTavern is designed for events run by hosts and venues, not specifically for children. Hosts should consider their audience and collect any parental permission required for their events. If you believe a child provided us personal information without appropriate consent, contact us so we can review it.

11. Policy updates

We may change this policy as features or legal requirements change. We will post the revised policy with a new date and give additional notice when required. Questions can be sent to support@quiz-tavern.com.
